This MICHELIN designed poster was distributed in Europe and its lettering prefigures the future choice of the brand's typeface. In the early twentieth century, like the best illustrators of his generation, René Vincent (1879-1936) received commissions from large French industrial operators who wanted to publicise their products through advertising posters. One such was Michelin which, in late 1913, asked him to illustrate the "rescue of a family suffering tyre-related distress".
Puffing nonchalantly on a cigar, Bibendum offers "the best of himself", that is to say, a Michelin tyre.
